The Preserve’s halls are painted mint green and gray. It smells like bleach and, beneath that, vomit. Celeste Rogers, the girl who obsessively pulls out her hair, stands near the Exit door, her hands shaking, her lips constantly in motion. I look around, filled with panic. Wait. What am I doing here? What’s going on?

Suddenly, my parents push past me, along with a nurse who’s filling out a clipboard of paperwork. “Keep her in here forever,” my mother demands, pointing at me. “She’s a monster. She killed her sister, and she nearly burned her friends alive.”

“They weren’t my friends,” I argue.

My mother rounds on me, fury on her face. “See?” she says to the nurse. “She doesn’t even realize how awful she is.”

The front door opens again, letting in another figure. I squint hard, my heart missing a few beats. Is that…Courtney? That makes no sense. But yes, it’s my sister. Her hands are in her pockets. She’s wearing the same yellow shirt she had on the night of the sleepover. There’s dirt all over her hair, too. Cement slathered across her face. Casts on her arm and leg.

“What happened to you?” I ask, stupidly, staring at the casts. They bear the same drawings as my piece of the Time Capsule flag, the one she stole. Logos, hearts, a wishing well. The word Someone.

Courtney gives me a startled—and then angry—look. “I fell,” she says simply. Her mouth twists. “Into a hole.”

Then she peers over her shoulder. Someone has walked in behind her. Emily.

“Emily,” I run up to her, relieved she’s here. “What’s going on? What are we doing here? We have to get out!”

Emily squints. Her expression is totally blank. “I’m sorry, who are you?”

I wheel back, stricken. “Don’t you know?”

A deep voice laughs in the corner. Christopher leans against the check-in desk, surveying the scene. His arms are crossed over his chest, his hospital pajama pants drag on the ground as he walks toward me. “Come on,” he says, taking my hand. “You and I belong together. That’s the plan. Not you and her.”

“No!” I cry, trying to get away from him. His hand digs sharply into my arm. “No!” I scream again, but it’s no use. We’re crossing through the ward’s doors, leaving Emily behind.

“Ali. Ali.”

I jolt awake, breathing hard. The room is dark, minty-smelling. Curtains billow at large, square windows on the opposite wall. “Ali,” a soft voice says again.

Emily is propped up on her elbows just inches from my face. She looks worried. Her eyes gleam in the dim moonlight streaming in from the slit in the blinds.

“What is it?” I sit up fast, feeling dizzy. The back of my neck is sweaty. I can still smell The Preserve in my nostrils. The dream feels lodged in my chest. I look at Emily, my Emily, trying to erase the Emily from the dream entirely.

Emily stabs furtively at the window. “I think there’s someone outside.”

It takes me a moment to process this. Slowly, I swing my legs over the bed and rush across the carpet.
